Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
