Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
