Powerful Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens advised to avoid going out as powerful gusts strike the country.

Intense gusts reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and led officials to cancel in excess of 100 flights, as reported by local media.

The gales are affecting the whole South Island and southern sections of the North Island, as stated by the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have released uncommon severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas including Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for more utility disruptions.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Measures

The power cut seems to be impacting homes mostly in the southern region, although agencies report that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was killed after being hit by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was swept into moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the city have been halted because of the gusts, and certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have announced a emergency situation, to assist emergency management operations.

Labor Protests Amid Extreme Conditions

These intense gusts on Thursday come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", demanding higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has forced them to change some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or cancelled.

Comparable winds are also sweeping Australia, causing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Authorities have announced fire bans for apprehension regarding wildfires.
