Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
