A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
